8. What new Amendments were created during the Civil War and Reconstruction era?

The 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments were added to the Constitution at this time. The 13th amendment abolishes and outlaws slavery. The 14th amendment gives all citizens equal protection of the law, grants them federal and state citizenship regardless of their race, prevents anyone from being denied life, liberty, and property, and prevents states from giving citizens special privileges. The 15 amendment gives all citizens the right to vote regardless of race or skin color.

5. Examine the argument to leave union by the secessionists.

California needed a strong state to maintain order, so they decided to seek statehood in December of 1849. At this time slave states and free states were evenly divided. If California tipped the balance slave holding states wouldn't like the idea of being the minority in the senate, they feared it would lead to limits on slavery. "Southern politicians began talk of secession, taking their states out of the union." Slavery was the primary source of income for the southern states, leaving the union might have been a good idea at the time but would had been bad for our country in the long run if Henry Clay didn't get his compromise passed in 1850.

7. What developments prior to the civil war gave the North an advantage over the South?
The North and the South were always divided, not only in ideals, but in economic construction. The Northern states were always known to have an economy centralized around factories and industry which proves to be an edge when it comes to warfare, while the South had agriculture. This already puts the North ahead in ability to mass produce weaponry than the South, but something remarkable happened that changed the way weaponry, and machinery were made, and gave the North an edge that was incomprehensible in the aid of the downfall of the South in the civil war. Shortly before the civil an event occurred in the United States shortly after it happened in Britain; The Industrial Revolution had carried over into the United States along with it new ideas. One of the ideas was interchangeable parts. This was the idea for certain machinery, and most importantly weaponry, had certain parts that would be able to be replaced with ease as guns would now be put together with difference parts. This was a good idea due to the fact that weapons were created as a unique one item deal, but this was an inconvenience on the battlefield due to the fact when an item breaks it is usually due to one part of the weapon. With this new idea weapons could know be easily replaced quickly and efficiently, and due to the Northern industrial nature, they had the ability of mass producing these parts, and this would soon show that the Northern weaponry would out weigh that of the Southerner's weaponry. With these developments many people before the Civil War had moved to the North and started urbanization and caused the population to increase in cities, therefore increase output of materials such as ammunition, or boots, canned food, or even interchangeable parts. These advantages ensured the victory for the North as the Civil war became a war of attrition the North slowly but surely outlasted the South and led to the inevitable victory of the North.

Question#1: Does the Monroe Doctrine represent a continuation or a change in President Washington's foreign policy?

The Monroe Doctrine was a continuation of President Washington's foreign policy which was isolationism. The Monroe doctrine made the Western Hemisphere completely off limits to European colonization. This shows that the Monroe Doctrine continued Washington's foreign policy by isolating the Western Hemisphere from all European colonization.

6. How did the Dred Scot Vs. Sanford decision increase sectional division?

The Dred Scot case Vs. Sanford was a decision by the Supreme court. They said that congress's law that slavery was banned was unconstitutional and void. The Dred Scot ruling voided any limitation on the expansion of slavery. Thus slavery was to be allowed in the new Western states if they wanted it. This made pro slavery group very happy. The Republicans who are anti slavery argued that Dred Scot should not be heard by the Supreme court, the Supreme court should have dismissed the case.

1. Does the Monroe Doctrine represent a continuation or a change in President Washington’s foreign policy?

The Monroe Doctrine represents a continuation in President Washington's foreign policy. For example the Monroe Doctrine is meant to threaten any countries that want to colonials in America. It was a empty threat with nothing to back it up with. Yet, other countries stayed away. Washington's policy warned the people of the United States to be wary of alliances with other countries. Both of the doctrine and the policy show hesitation from any foreign contact and affairs.

5. Examine the argument to leave Union by the Secessionists.

Many states southern states wanted to leave the union for a variety of reasons. The country was divided for a long time, but instead of just separating, which ends up occurring, they just make compromises in the mean time. Slavery was a main reason why states decided to leave the union. In the south, the base of the economy was agriculture. Slaves did their labor without pay, so the South were pro-slavery. That made all of them slave states. When a new state wanted to join the union they had to decide whether they would be a slave or free state. The issue with that was if they decided to be a slave state, then the free states would be angry and vice versa. This was an issue if they ever wanted to abolish slavery. I think the south states finally got fed up with all the compromises, and wanted to make their own decisions, which finally came to its conclusion when they seceded. The seceded states finally made up their own union called the Confederacy.

8. What new Amendments were created during the Civil War and Reconstruction era?

The new amendments that were created during the civil war and the reconstruction after it were the 13th Amendment, the 14th amendment, and the 15th amendment. The 13th amendment was the amendment that abolished slavery. This amendment was ratified on december 6, 1865 and was the formal end to all slavery in the union. This amendment was very easily passed because the southern states were not yet reinstated into the union while it was going through congress. The 14th amendment was the right for all citizens to be protected by natural rights, even slaves. This amendment stated that as long as you were born in the union or were accepted as a citizen there in the eyes of the government, you were protected by natural rights that were "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". The 15th amendment was the amendment that gave all african american male citizens the right to vote. This amendment was a huge step in the direction of equality towards the newly freed african american slaves in the Union.

Question #4: How did the 2nd Great Awakening affect the reform spirit of the mid-1800’s?

The Second Great Awakening directly impacted the rise of three groups in the mid-1800’s seeking social reform/change. One of the groups that arose was the people pushing for a temperance movement. The temperance movement was largely supported by women and gained momentum from the strict religious morals stressing low-alcohol use. This movement gave women momentum of a feeling of power, like their voices were heard, so they moved on to a new movement: women’s suffrage. This second group wanted the right to vote expanded to women 18 years and older. The successful temperance movement and equality stressed in the church motivated he women to start demanding their rights. The third group to arise was the abolition movement. The abolitionists gained momentum after the Second Great Awakening because of the religious spirit stressing tolerance, and the women’s suffrage movement gaining speed granting equal rights for women.

Q- Examine the argument to leave the Union by the Secessionists
A-The secessionists wanted to leave the union for various reasons. One reason that stood out was the politics over whether slavery was legal or moral. After different cases such as Dred Scott, the Kansas- Nebraska Act, and John Brown’s raid of Harper’s Ferry, the southern states decided they had valid reason to secede. On February 8th,1861, delegates from the states that were seceding, met in Montgomery. Here they declared themselves to be a separate nation called the Confederate States of America or the Confederacy. Their form of government was very similar to that of the union’s constitution. This split of the nation was a leading factor in the beginning of the Civil War.

Question #2: Identify three key incidents when federal authorities clashed with state authorities

The controversy on whether or not the nation should have a second national bank was an issue. The nullification also was a big deal; South Carolina said they basically did not have to follow federal law or the Constitution

2. Identify three key incidents when Federal Authorities clashed with State Authorities.

-In 1819, the Union was separated evenly with 11 free states and 11 slave states. Most of the Northerners believed that if slavery moved further West, that the path of humanity was moving in the wrong direction. Meanwhile, in the South, they believed that if slavery didn't continue westward that the free states would slowly overtake the country. In 1819, the territory of Missouri requested for statehood into the Union. But, that would upset the balance. Luckily, within a year, Maine requested for statehood. That same year the Senate passed a vote which admitted Missouri, as a slave state, and Maine, as a free state, into the Union. This was later to be known as the Missouri Compromise.

-During 1828 many South Carolinians were threatening to secede from the Union. After the turn of the century, South Carolina's economy was becoming worse every month and the residents of South Carolina blamed the high national tariffs. In 1828 Congress began to collect a new tax called the "Tariff of Abominations". South Carolinians were already paying heavy taxes because they received most of their goods from England. John C. Calhoun, Vice President of the United States and resident of South Carolina, was angered from this new tariff and proposed "nullification" of the Union. Nullification meant that the states of the Union had a right to be able to nullify.

Following the annexation of Texas into the Union in 1845, a Democratic Representative from Pennsylvania named David Wilmot gave a proposal to Congress that any territory gained from Mexico should not allow any form of slavery. Although all Southerners opposed this proposal viciously, a greater majority of Whigs and Northerners passed the Wilmot Proviso through the House of Representatives. John C. Calhoun believed, though, that Americans should be able to bring their slaves along to the new territories. Lewis Cass of Michigan said that these new territories should be able to make their own decisions on whether or not slavery would be allowed in their own separate territories. This new phenomenon was called popular sovereignty.

7. What developments prior to the civil war gave the North an advantage over the South?

Aside from having a much more superior army, the North had other advantages over the South, such as having more money and more industrialized society. The North were able to manufacture goods(war supplies, rations, etc.) much faster than the South due to the abundance of factories. They also had many more immigrants from Europe who desperately needed jobs and would run these factories for very little pay, thus raising the North's population, as well as man power.

5. Examine the argument to leave the Union by the Secessionists.

The south wanted to leave the Union for many reasons, but slavery was the biggest reason. In 1849, when California wanted to become a state there were 15 free and slave states. Giving California statehood would upset this balance because the slaveholding states feared it would put limits on slavery. With that Southern politicians started to talk about seceding from the Union. In 1850 a compromise was passed that allowed California to join as a free state and prevented congress from interfering with the slave trade in the south. Another reason the south wished to secede was the Nullification Crisis. The economy in South Carolina was growing very weak so the people blamed the tariffs. Because they purchased goods from England, the tariffs made them very expensive. When the Tariff of Abominations surfaced in 1828, this caused South Carolinians to threaten to leave the Union.

4. How did the Second Great Awakening affect the reform spirit of the mid-1800?

The Second Great Awakening affected the reform spirit in the mid-1800s because it led to ideas such as abolition, temperance and suffrage. In this time, many religious groups had high numbers of converts. Therefore the people had new ideas of how they wanted their country to be. The abolitionist movement took place because people did not agree with the slavery laws, and wanted to put an end to the slave trade. Because of this women in america realized that they too could fight for their own political rights. The idea of temperance came from people believing that alcohol was "the devils drink", leading to abstinence from alcoholism.

7. What developments prior to the civil war gave the North an advantage over the South?

Prior to the civil war developments during the Industrial Revolution gave the North an advantage over the South. Factories started making interchangeable parts for their weaponry and machinery instead of every soldier having his own unique machine. This allowed soldiers to be able to change or fix their weapon quickly since the problem was most likely because of one part of the weapon. Because of mass production every soldier could have an interchangeable machine. This allowed the North to outlast the attrition.

The new amendments were created during the Civil War and Reconstruction era. During this time there were 3 different amendments added to the constitution. Lincoln wanted to end slavery permanently. By getting the amendment through to Congress they invited Democrats to help banish it. On January 31, 1865, the 13th amendment was added to the constitution to abolish slavery. Next was The Civil rights act of 1866, in June congress passed the 14th amendment. This amendment states that anyone who was born in United States by any race, except the Native Americans were granted rights to owning property and to be treated as equal. Lastly the final amendment added to the constitution during the end of the war was the 15th amendment. #3: describe the changes that President Jackson instituted in order to make the government more inclusive and democratic?

Amungst the things that Jackson applied in an attempt to make the government more inclusive was the utilization of the spoils system. The spoils system was the practice of giving persons jobs in government based on party loyalty and support. From Jacksons perspective this practice would terminate permanent office-holding class and open up jobs in government for the average man in the process. President Jackson felt strongly about bringing a government position to ordinary citizens and creating opportunities fornthe common man. This feeling largely represented his background, for he was the first president that was raised poor and was a part of a lower-class. Another instance of Jackson attempting to make the givernment more democratic was he was the first president to allow regular and lower-class citizens to vote in a presidential election. Jacksons supporters were all for making a more democratic political-system.

9.Do you think President Lincoln and Johnson were wise in not seeking harsh punishment of the southern states?
I think President Lincoln and Johnson made the right choice by refusing to severely punish the south. Although the south had gone against the Union, punishing them would only make them resent the Union more. If the presidents had chosen to punish the south, it could have caused southerns to rebel against the government again. The southerns could have successfully broken away from the Union if they felt they weren't being treated fairly. If President Lincoln and President Johnson had treated the situation any other way, our history would be completely different.

6. How did the Dred Scot Vs. Sanford decision increase sectional division?

Dred Scott was a slave but when his slaveowner took him to the north, he should have been considered free according to the Missouri Compromise. However, upon returning to the south, Scott was still considered to his slaveowner. When he took his case to court, the court dismissed him because they did not view him a a true citizen to the US. To the supreme court, the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional. This pleased Democrats and upset the Republicans. The decision divides the two parties farther not only because of their disagreement on states rights, but also on their views on slaves. The results intensified the tension between the Democrats and the republicans which in turn widened the gap between north and south.

5. Examine the argument to leave the Union by the Secessionists.

As South Carolina's economy tanked in the early 1800s, the state's population needed something to blame. Their fingers pointed at the reoccurring tariffs. Because of the slow commercial activity there, South Carolina invested in getting their manufactured goods from England. Due to the tariffs, the prices elevated. It was as if Congress was already kicking the puppy while it was down because in 1828, the Tariff of Abominations was enforced. This angered the inhabitants of South Carolina so much that the state threatened to secede.
At the time of late 1849, California was in desperate need for a strong government in order to rid the extreme pandemonium that had arisen from the Gold Rush. Because of this, California requested entrance to the Union as a free state. This would cause the balance of fifteen free states and fifteen slave states to shatter, causing the slave states to become outnumbered. Southerners feared slavery restrictions, and therefore their politicians expressed desire to secede from the Union.

9. Do you think President Lincoln and Johnson were wise in not seeking harsh punishment of the southern states?

-Yes, I believe that when the south became part of the union again, President Lincoln and Johnson were smart to not punish them. Since the north had just won the war, leader of the Union, President Lincoln, and Pro-Union Tennessee senator, Johnson felt that the way to unify the Confederacy and Union was not to start fighting again, but to have the soldiers swear to the laws of the Union, and then proceed in their normal life as part of the United States. If the leaders had punished the south, another war/argument could have started and weakened the country as a whole.

The developments that helped the North get an advantage over the South were as follows.
First off the Northern guns were developed to have replaceable parts, which meant that during battles the northern soldiers guns would break and be ready for battle again in ten minutes, compared to the southern guns, which were custom made, so they did look nice but once it broke you would have to retreat.
Lastly the north had a more industrial oriented industry, so the south had an easier time with rations but had to buy expensive equipment and gunpowder, and the north only had to buy rations. And to add insult to injury, the north controlled the navy which led them to cause imports to slow immensely.

US History: Chapter 2 Essay Question #7

7.What developments prior to the Civil War gave the North an advantage over the South?

The Civil War was decided before the war even started. This was due to a certain set of advantages that the North had for the type of was that they would be fighting. This would be a war of attrition. This means that the country that could last the longest in the fight would win. The advantages that the North posed were a stronger navy, a better infrastructure, and also had a heavy focus on manufacturing goods.
The North or more properly named the Union had a much stronger navy than the Confederate south. This allowed them to set a plan into place named the Anaconda Plan. The goal of the Anaconda Plan was to starve out the south. They used there bigger navy to blockade all of the ports the belonged to the confederates and even up into the Mississippi river. This type of plan allowed the union to starve the economy of the south. The south had a heavily agricultural focused economy. This made it so to procure weapons on supplies by trading the good with other countries. The Anaconda Plan prevented this. It also made shipping supplies across the South much harder if they were not able to receive supplies as quickly if they were able to.
The Union also had a much better infrastructure this allowed them to ship a larger amount of supplies and men to where ever they needed to be. This could be done by railroad or by sea. This gave a huge advantage because it allowed union armies to receive reinforcements much more quickly, which could sway the tide of battle.
Finally the Union had a manufacturing based economy. This manufacturing based helped them to create interchangeable parts for their weapons. This was very useful because you would no longer have to get a gunsmith to fix every single unique rifle like the Confederacy had to. This allowed the Union to have a much better supplied army. They also had better access to uniforms and food, which the South lacked. By the end of the civil war the armies of the Confederacy could simply not be well enough supplied to fight the fully armed and strengthened armies of the Union.
The Confederacy although they did have far superior generals could not keep up with the type for war that was fought. The better Infrastructure, the larger navy, and the focus on manufacturing goods allowed the Union to keep the war going even when they were loosing at first. This was the first time that a more modern type of war was fought. It was no longer who had the bigger army and the better generals. It became a war of which country was better equipped.

4. How did the second great awakening affect the reform spirit of the mid 1800’s?

The Second Great Awakening had a huge affect on the reform spirit in the mid 1800's. Many people who joined the Protestant Church were inspired to make changes because of their spiritual awakening. Preachers would hold large meetings in churches and in tents all over the country that were called revivals. They preached about making the world a better place through the church. They inspired people to want to change and make the world a better place. Also the church preached that alcohol was bad and the people took it one step further and wanted to ban alcohol in America. This started the Temperance Movement. Women started the temperance movement and temperance societies to get people to pledge not to drink alcohol. At these meetings people would talk about change and exchange ideas. They would discuss other things that they could change or improve in society. This was the starting point for women’s suffrage and for the abolition movement. Many other reform movements were started as a result of the Second Great Awakening. Temperance, abolitionism, and women’s suffrage were the most important of these movements and had a great impact on America.

4. How did the second great awakening affect the reform spirit of the 1800's?

The Second Great Awakening had an enormous effect on the reform spirit in the mid 1800s. There was a revival of religious revival for protestants and other religious groups. While social reforms were taking place in the form of temperance, the women's role, and slavery. The temperance group was preaching about the evils of alcohol, and what it has done to others. The women had supported this group, and argued that no social vice had caused more crime, poverty, or family damage that was because of alcohol. Another movement was the women's movement. Women were not educated on on voter and were not allowed to vote. Slavery was another big impact during this time period. A good example is Frederick Douglas and he had escaped from slavery in Maryland; in fact, he wrote a article about it. In 1831 there was a slave rebellion that left over 50 White Virginians dead.

3. Describe the changes that President Jackson instituted in order to make the government more inclusive and democratic?

President Jackson belived that the 2nd US Bank posed a threat to the American economy and it's democratic political institutions. In 1832, Jackson vetoed the bill that would have extended it's sanction. A year after, he removed all federal funds from the second bank, redistributing them to various state banks. Thus, starting to give the people and their states power.
